Donald Henry Hinkle
I write illustrated novels, parables, and short works that live somewhere between history, imagination, and moral inquiry. My stories are rooted in mid-century America and shaped by faith, doubt, humor, and the stubborn hope that meaning can still be found.
I grew up loving illustrated stories — Sunday comics at the breakfast table with my father, Carl Barks’ Donald Duck adventures, Tintin, and later Hemingway, Steinbeck, and Mickey Spillane. When I began writing fiction of my own, I wanted to illustrate it.
After years working with 3-D art programs, I eventually began collaborating with AI tools to create images that support the stories I want to tell. I see them not as replacements for imagination, but as instruments — new pencils in an old tradition.
I live and work on Martha’s Vineyard.
